2022 NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Regional fields selected

Stanford, Oregon, South Carolina, Wake Forest, San Jose State and Oklahoma State each earned No. 1 seeds as the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Committee announced its selection of 72 teams and 36 individuals to participate in the 2022 NCAA Women’s Regionals, May 9-11.

Twelve SEC schools earned spots into the Regional fields, the most of any conference, followed by 10 from the ACC and nine from the Pac-12. The Big 12 has seven schools in the postseason and the Big Ten has six.

For the first time, there will be six Women’s Regional tournaments, each scheduled for 54 holes, an increase from four in previous years. The NCAA Women’s Golf Committee made the decision to expand the number of regionals in November in order to help make it easier to complete play each day in the event of bad weather. Last May, the NCAA canceled the Women’s Regional scheduled for The University Club in Baton Rouge, La., without players ever hitting a shot after several days of rain soaked LSU’s home course. The controversial decision meant the top six seeded schools advanced to the NCAA Championship and the rest had their seasons frustratingly cut short.

Each regional will now have 12 teams instead of 18 and six individuals, with the top four teams and two individuals advancing to the 2022 NCAA Women’s Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, May 20-25.

For the seventh time, the national championship will include a stroke-play segment to determine the individual champion (72 holes) and whittle the field down to eight schools who then compete in a head-to-head match-play bracket to determine a team champion. Twenty-four different programs have advanced to match play since the format was adopted in 2015, with Stanford being the lone school that has reached match play all six times while USC and Duke have reached five times.

Ole Miss is the defending NCAA champions, after knocking off Oklahoma State in the finals last May at Grayhawk G.C. The Rebels were the first SEC school to win the title since the move to incorporate match play.
