This happiness did not extend to the 17th, otherwise known as The Road hole, as players struggled to navigate the tricky hole that lies in the shadow of the Old Course Hotel.
Some of the best players at the 113th Open had to work extremely hard to escape the 17th with their scorecard still in good shape. The likes of Ian Baker-Finch, Tom Watson and eventual Open winner Seve Ballesteros all had considerable trouble.
The Road hole could easily be the end of the road for a player’s title hopes and you’d be hard pressed to find a more difficult hole at The Open.
