Some players are synonymous with certain tournaments, and it’s usually because they’ve won said tournament multiple times. Webb Simpson and the Wyndham Championship are one of the prime examples, this despite the fact he has just one victory in the event.
On top of that one victory though, Simpson has a truck load of top-six finishes at Sedgefield Country Club, seven to be exact, and five of those have been in the top three, including the win. He’s a huge fan of the Donald Ross design, and the fans in Greensboro are a huge fan of Simpson, too. The Wake Forest graduate loves the tournament so much that he named one of his daughters Wyndham. True story.
So it comes as no surprise that Simpson is the lone favorite at a number of sportsbooks this week, a product of his remarkable course history in addition to the fact he’s played better in his last two starts. After a pair of uncharacteristic missed cuts in the U.S. Open and Rocket Mortgage Classic, the uber-consistent Simpson has gotten back on track with consecutive top 20s in the Open Championship and the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. Having said that, his approach numnbers over his last four starts have not been good, which will likely alarm a number of would-be Webb bettors this week. In each of his last four starts at the Wyndham, he’s gained at least 3.4 strokes on approach.
Just below Simpson is Hideki Matsuyama, who is coming off a pair of strong performances at the Olympics and the WGC-FedEx St. Jude. Louis Oosthuizen, still in search of his first win on American soil, checks in right after, with former Wyndham winner Patrick Reed following close behind. For some good value, Will Zalatoris is a bit further down the board after his top 10 in Memphis, which was his first top 10 since the PGA Championship.
Here are all the odds (updated in real-time, thanks to our friends at Metabet) for the 2021 Wyndham Championship.
