Players 2022: Russell Henley goes double bogey-albatross because this tournament wasn’t crazy already

PONTE VEDRA BEACH — The 2022 Players Championship has seen just pretty much everything: torrential rain, gale-force winds, tornado watches, frost warnings, holes-in-one, etc. So why not an albatross?

Russell Henley obliged on Monday in the final round. After teeing off on the 10th hole and making a double-bogey 6, Henley found the fairway on the par-5 11th hole and had 240 yards into the green.

Unfortunately there was no video of the feat, but this screen grab of his highly unusual scorecard is interesting.

En route to the “rarest of birds,” Henley became the sixth golfer to make an albatross at the Players since 1983 and the third to do so on the 11th hole. The last was Henley’s former Georgia Bulldog teammate Harris English during Round 1 in 2019. Prior to that, Hunter Mahan had a 2 on the 11th in 2007.

Henley’s albatross was the second of the 2021-22 PGA Tour season. The first was from Abraham Ancer when he holed out from 250 yards on the par-5 14th at the CJ Cup in October.

UPDATE, 3:03 p.m. — Russell Henley’s wild final round continued after his crazy down and up start. Henley made a birdie on the par-3 17th to turn in two-under 32. Then playing the front nine he birdied the first and eagled the second. On the sixth hole, Henley made bogey, meaning that his final-round scorecard will include this incredible golf straight: albatross, eagle, birdie, par, bogey and double bogey.
