Sam Burns is looking to test the “flood gates” theory on Sunday at the AT&T Byron Nelson (and we’re not talking about the early tee times the PGA Tour implemented to try to avoid the wet afternoon forecast outside Dallas). The 24-year-old former college player of the year at LSU had held the 54-hole lead three times during the 2020-21 season, falling short the first two before finally closing the deal two weeks ago at the Valspar Championship. With Burns finally grabbing his maiden PGA Tour title, many observers suggested the lifted burden of getting that first win would lead to a potential rush of more titles.
Well, in Burns’ next tour start, he’s trying to see if golf cognoscenti has it right. For the fourth time this season—the most of any player—he leads or shares the lead heading into a final round. Should Burns come through and win again on Sunday, he would become the first player since Camilo Villegas in 2008 to win his first two tour titles in consecutive starts. He’d also become on the third players to win multiple events in the 2020-21 “super” season.
The overall prize money payout at TPC Craig Ranch is $8.1 million with the winner getting $1.458 million. Should Burns take first place, he’d increase his career earnings to $6.6 million
