There’s a saying about the Players Championship, that it’s a tournament that doesn’t favor any one kind of player. And through 36 holes this week at TPC Sawgrass, that certainly seems to hold true.
The leader board heading into the weekend is indeed an eclectic mix of highly ranked stars and journeyman pros, Americans and internationals, bombers and some that are more distantly challenged.
There weren’t many who likely thought the leader through two rounds would be a golfer set to turn 48 next month. But Lee Westwood’s career resurgence in the last two years shouldn’t make his 69-66 showing over the first two days that surprising. He’ll have a comfortable pairing for the third round Saturday as he’ll be joined in the final group by countryman Matthew Fitzpatrick, 21 years his junior but someone who he is more than friendly with.
Below are the rest of the twosomes that will tee off the first hole at TPC Sawgrass Saturday. Among the names you won’t find in the list that might surprise you are Rory McIlroy, the defending champion, who struggled with a 79-75 showing to miss the cut by 10 shots. Other notables missing from the weekend: Scottie Scheffler, Hideki Matsuyama, Tyrrell Hatton, Tommy Fleetwood, Webb Simpson, Tony Finau, Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele.
